Summary of Major Responsibilities

The Laboratory Specialist II will work closely with laboratory operations management to schedule and perform a variety of molecular biology procedures. This role will have a keen eye for process improvement and troubleshooting while following Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The Laboratory Specialist will also collaborate with other scientists and management to perform clinical laboratory testing meeting excellent quality standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Test laboratory developed tests and in vitro diagnostic device (IVD) kits according to established SOPs; including, but not limited to, receiving, and accessioning of samples, whole blood separation, freezer management, and protein immunoassay.
  • Follow the clinical laboratories’ procedures for handling and processing of specimens and proficiency testing materials.
  • Ensure testing meets cost, turnaround time, quality, and other critical product performance metrics required to deliver the best results and experience to customers.
  • Perform routine maintenance, calibrations, and troubleshooting on equipment.
  • Cover testing personnel scheduling gaps, as needed.
  • Maintain records of quality control, maintenance, and relevant testing data for assigned workstations according to the laboratory and document control policies.

  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 25% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment including microscopes, microtomes, blades, strainers, pipettes for extended periods of time.
  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
  • Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, or field as outlined in the essential duties.
  • 2+ years of experience in accessioning patient samples.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with basic laboratory calculations, such as dilutions and weights.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain certification from a nationally recognized certification agency, such as ASCP or state licensure that has been determined to be equivalent certification within 12 months of hire and maintain throughout employment in position.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, and personal computer (PC) workstations.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of GLP and other relevant federal and state regulatory agency standards such as CLIA/CAP.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures and practices such as standard precautions and hazardous chemical handling.
