Summary of Major Responsibilities

The Automation Scientist is responsible for providing outstanding technical support to Exact Sciences customers, with emphasis on equipment and automation processes used during clinical assays. This position works in collaboration with others on resolving customer equipment issues or equipment maintenance questions in a timely manner.  The Automation Scientist modifies equipment maintenance procedures such as manuals and service maintenance procedures. The individual in this role also generates training material and occasionally performs hands on trainings to transfer equipment knowledge to the customer.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receives and documents incoming customer communications.
  • Works cooperatively within the Technical Services team and when appropriate internal functional departments to troubleshoot and resolve customer questions related to equipment use, maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • When needed conducts experiments to reproduce customer issues and find root cause of failure.
  • Summarizes and documents troubleshooting activities.
  • Gathers user input and modifies existing standard operating procedures for installation and maintenance of clinical assay equipment, ensuring documents reflect best practices.
  • Generates service bulletins alerting service personnel of new service procedures, and rolls existing service bulletins into service manuals at regular intervals.
  • Creates training material such as Power Points and training checklists that aid in transferring knowledge of new/modified processes and equipment.
  • Schedules and conducts train the trainer classes to transfer new equipment processes to the customer.
  • Maintain and continuously develop personal knowledge and expertise related to the service of complex clinical laboratory equipment.
  • Contributes ideas to improve team process.

  • Experience in using basic operating system applications including Microsoft Office (Word – use track changes, create table of contents linked to headings and figures, Excel - able to create and modify spreadsheets, create formulas, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications (optional)

  • Experience working in a technical support function role desired.
  • Experience in a Medical Device field working in a regulated environment, e.g., ISO 13485, FDA GMP, or USDA.
  • Understanding of the Quality System Regulations and Service requirements defined therein.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in technology, electronics, molecular biology, or a related field.
  • Experience in equipment maintenance, familiarity with tools such as caliper, torque wrenches, multimeter.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to use computers daily in an interactive manner for extended periods of time and up to 8 hours per day.
  • Ability to frequently and accurately communicate with employees and customers in person, via the telephone or by email.
  • Ability to sit for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and up to 6 hours at a time.
  • Ability to follow company safety guidelines.
  • Constant walking or motion to coordinate work and interact with co-workers.
  • Ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move up to 25lbs.
  • Ability to employ gross motor and fine motor skills for troubleshooting and replicating maintenance of laboratory equipment.
