Summary of Major Responsibilities

The Systems Test Engineer ensures that in vitro diagnostic systems designed by Exact Sciences meet design and customer requirements.  The Systems Test Engineer uses a technical background in software development and engineering, combined with an understanding of the system design, to analyze user needs, requirements, and specifications to create testing strategies for verification and validation of the system designs.  Typical testing techniques include Ad Hoc exploratory testing, manual test case execution, and automated software testing.  Test plans and results are documented within existing Software Development Life Cycle and Document Control Systems.  This position reports to Systems Development Management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Analyze user needs and requirements.
  • Design testing strategies and detailed test plans for functional verification at module, unit, and system levels to ensure that product requirements, quality system requirements, regulatory requirements, and design specifications have been met.
  • Document test plans, acceptance criteria and test results.
  • Write and execute system and software verification and validation tests.
  • Effectively record, reproduce, and communicate software and hardware bugs to development staff and contribute to their resolution.
  • Review and author design control documents.
  • Work with external vendors to verify and validate software and hardware platforms.
  • Contribute to system design history files.
  • Troubleshoot system issues and failures.
  • Develop training and trouble-shooting manuals for service personnel.


Mandatory Skills

  • Demonstrated proficiency outside of classwork in programming of robotic or embedded systems
  • Ability to self-train in new programing languages
  • Strong observational and analytical skills
  • Statistical data analysis using Excel or JMP
  • Written and oral report presentation
  • Create and document design specifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical science, or related field, with emphasis on control of robotic or embedded systems through software.
  • Outstanding academic achievement with at least one year of work or extracurricular experience using robotics or embedded systems.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to use computers daily in an interactive manner for extended periods of time and up to 8 hours per day.
  • Ability to work at laboratory bench up to 6 hours at a time.
  • Ability to travel (by land and air), both domestically and internationally, on occasion.
  • Ability to frequently and accurately communicate with employees, customers, and vendors in person, via the telephone or by email.
  • Constant walking or motion to coordinate work and interact with co-workers.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 75 pounds on an occasional basis.
