  • Summary of Major Responsibilities

    The leadership role of Specimen Processing Technical Specialist provides services of a technical nature in the laboratory areas.  This position is responsible for supporting the coordination of day-to-day activities in the laboratory to ensure prompt test processing. Specimen Processing Technical Specialist is the front line in trouble shooting.  The position works directly with the Specimen Processing Supervisor to anticipate and resolve issues related to efficiencies in throughput, staffing, and laboratory processes. The Specimen Processing Technical Specialist will maintain accurate data reporting practices to ensure consistent and diligent execution of specimen processing.  

     

    The shift for this position is Monday - Friday from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM. 

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Performs all assigned job duties following laboratory policies and procedure
    • Assists in Quality Assurance data collection and analysis
    • Ensures prompt, accurate and timely processing and delivery of all patient specimens
    • Handles and disposes of all specimen following universal precautions and applicable safety policies
    • Maintains accurate records of problems and problem resolution related to specimen processing
    • Troubleshoots equipment, consumables, software, LIS, and sample issues
    • Coordinates and verifying user acceptance testing
    • Manages and investigates pending lists
    • Maintains Maintenance Module
    • Manages lab innovation projects
    • Recognizes problems and assists the Specimen Processing Supervisor in identifying causes
    • Takes part in department projects and initiatives including but not limited to quality improvement teams (QIT), and quality improvement investigations such as root cause analysis (RCA), standard operating procedure (SOP) development, department inspections and audits
    • Performs all essential responsibilities of the Specimen Processing Associate and Specimen Processing Specialist
    • Meets standards for production and accuracy within 6 months in role
    • Attends meetings and discussions relevant to role
    • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    • Strong understanding of function and use of LIS
    • Advanced understanding of Excel including creating and maintaining macros
    • Basic knowledge of Microsoft suite including Visio

    Necessary Education & Experience

    • High school diploma or GED, with some college course work required
    • Must be 18 years of age or older and must be legally authorized to work in the United States
    • 3 or more years of experience working in a laboratory setting

    Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

    • Ability to lift and move 20-40 pounds on an occasional basis (up to 25% of time)
    • Ability to stand, walk, bend and reach on a regular basis (standing ~25% of time; sitting ~75% of time)
    • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height
    • Position requires work in normal laboratory environment; personal protective equipment is required while working in the laboratory
    • Ability to work with a computer for extended periods of time
