  • Summary of Major Responsibilities

    The Research Scientist, Protein Assays works individually or in collaboration with others on projects which are complex in scope. The primary activities will be to support the research and development of protein assays for new or existing products. The Research Scientist may be responsible for direct supervision of a research team.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Designs and conducts experiments within several product or technology areas.
    • Prepares experimental plans and effectively communicates them to the team.
    • Ability to manage a team and cultivate a collaborative work environment.
    • Ability to establish objectives for individual contributors and establish development plans.
    • Responsible for providing employee feedback and completing performance reviews in timely manner.
    • Ability to make hiring decisions to meet the needs of the business.
    • Presents experimental results to supervisor or management team.
    • Presents information and updates at project or departmental meetings.
    • Contributes ideas to improve team processes.
    • Maintains knowledge of technological industry developments that could assist in completion of an assignment, aid in the development of new processes or procedures, or lead to a new product.
    • Attends technical conferences or seminars.
    • Provides technical input and has great influence in decisions affecting project planning and experimental design.
    • Extensive experience operating and maintaining scientific instrumentation.
    • Prepares reports and documentation providing the analysis or summarization of project status and results.
    • Plans, designs, and executes technical studies.
    • Prepares detailed technical protocols.
    • Works on individual assignments and leads project team members as appropriate to meet department and project objectives.
    • May act as leader for a complex project, including projects involving research collaborators.
    • Presents findings at scientific meetings, to collaborators, or to customers.
    • Prepares and/or contributes to articles for publication.
    • Supports and complies with the company's hazardous waste management program, including following safe, hazardous waste handling practices.
    • Effectively utilizes and applies methods or technologies and provides ideas for new techniques, when appropriate.
    • Maintains lab notebook in a complete and consistent manner, following all legal, ISO and QSR requirements as well as keeping clear and complete.
    • Ability to review lab notebooks to ensure complete and concise documentation practices.
    • Works within project timeframes that are established collaboratively by team members.
    • Trains techniques and procedures to junior level research associates.
    • Ability to allocate appropriate resources to multiple projects and adjust based on business priority.
    • Understands project scope as it relates to budgeting, resources management and impact on the business.

    Education and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, or related field plus a minimum of 10 years’ experience, or Master’s degree in a Life Sciences field plus at least 6 year of industry experience, Ph.D. in a Life Sciences field plus 0-2 year of industry experience.
    • Extensive hands-on experience in immunoassay, protein and nucleic acid techniques.
    • Advanced knowledge of statistical and mathematical methods in biology/genetics, including experience with JMP software.
    • Extensive experience in using basic software applications including Microsoft Office (Word - generate documents and tables, Excel - able to create and modify spreadsheets, create complex formulas, etc.); Email – preferably Outlook; and various search engines for conducting Internet searches. 
    • Extensive experience working in a molecular diagnostics/clinical laboratory setting preferred.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds on an occasional basis.
    • Ability to travel by air, both domestically and internationally, on occasion.
    • Ability to use computers daily in an interactive manner for extended periods of time and up to 8 hours a day.
    • Constant walking or motion to communicate work and interact with co-workers.
    • Ability to work with blood, tissue, stool or other human specimen samples.
