  • Summary of Major Responsibilities

    Learning opportunity available for qualified area high achool or college students seeking to gain insight and technical knowledge in facilities maintenance. The Facilities Maintenance Intern will be introduced to multiple disciplines within facilities maintenance and will gain exposure to, but not limited to HVAC, Building Automation Systems, plumbing and electrical systems. In this position the candidate will learn and assist with basic repairs and preventative maintenance with direct supervision from maintenance technicians and management. The position will work within defined procedures and may assist in developing and documenting new procedures. This opportunity will be structured by learning critical workforce skills needed in a diverse and innovative field.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Communicate facility related issues to the Maintenance Manager to coordinate with internal customers, property owner or outside vendors.
    • Assist Maintenance Technicians with managing spare parts inventory and additional facility supplies as needed to minimize downtime.
    • Notify Facility Manager of facility issues that affect laboratory operations and safety issues concerns that arise from daily operations.
    • Aid in support of the facility and utility systems including: electrical distribution, plumbing, HVAC, compressed air systems, fire and life safety systems and emergency power.
    • Ability to use basic hand tools and shop equipment.
    • Learn how to use the CMMS system.
    • Complete misc. facility projects including furniture/employee moves, mounting and hanging fixtures/art, remodeling, organizing and maintaining shop areas, and other facility improvements.
    • Execute basic preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance tasks.
    • Complete building walkthroughs to assess the current condition of spaces, document findings, and take appropriate follow up action.
    • Uphold and role model safety procedures and safe practices.
    • Follow standard operating procedures (SOP).

    Qualifications

    Minimum Requirements

    • Enrolled in a high school or college program or equivalent (GED).
    • Ability to accurately follow procedures with direction from Maintenance Manager or Technicians.
    • Proven ability to work effectively in team situations as well as independently.
    • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to learn and perform basic facility repairs.
    • Ability to read, interpret and understand documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction.
    • Ability to adapt to a quickly changing work environment with rapidly changing needs and requests.
    • Computer literate and the ability to learn Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
    • Proficient use of electronic devices (smart phone, tablet, laptop, etc.).

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to use and wear safety protective gear/equipment (e.g. safety glasses, lab coat, gloves, respirator, etc.) and follow safety guidelines.
    • Ability to work with hazardous or flammable materials so as not to endanger oneself or others.
    • Ability to use hand and power tools, climb ladders, enter tight spaces requiring awkward postures.
    • Ability to sit for an extended period of time.
    • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and up to 6 hours at a time.
    • Ability to travel (by land), on occasion.
    • Ability to frequently and accurately communicate with employees, customers, and vendors in person, via the telephone or by email.
    • Constant walking or motion to coordinate work and interact with co-workers.
    • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis and routinely lift and move 40 pounds.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
