  • Summary of Major Responsibilities

    The Senior Specimen Processing Exception Handler performs the functions of the Exception Handler under the guided direction of the Specimen Processing Supervisor, Specimen Processing Lead, or designee. The Exception Handler provides support to both the Specimen Processing Laboratory and the Technical Laboratory. The Senior Exception Handler will follow all laboratory procedures and policies and maintain accurate data reporting practices as needed to ensure consistent and diligent execution of specimen processing, testing and the timely generation of patient results. 

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Report to work on time, and follow attendance guidelines
    • Conduct all assigned job duties in a timely and productive manner
    • Perform all job duties according to laboratory policies and procedures
    • Handle and dispose of all specimens following standard precautions and applicable safety policies
    • Investigate and resolve specimen issue(s) or test issue(s) for the whole Exact Sciences Clinical Laboratory to ensure timely and accurate reporting of results
    • Maintain accurate records of problems and problem resolutions related to specimen processing, specimen testing, inventory and equipment
    • Participate in quality investigations including but not limited to quality improvement teams (QIT) and root cause analysis (RCA)
    • Support the Specimen Processing Supervisor and the Specimen Processing Lead(s) in their mission of assuring the work quality of the Specimen Processing department
    • Follow proper specimen identification procedures in the execution of all job duties
    • Process laboratory specimens with emphasis on accuracy, timeliness, completeness and compliance
    • Work cross functionally with Call Center, Provider Support and Quality Assurance
    • Perform all essential responsibilities of the Specimen Processing Associate, Specimen Processing Associate II and Specimen Processing Exception Handler
    • Meet standards for production and accuracy within six (6) months
    • Maintain and update Exception Handling documents to accurately reflect current processes
    • Develop weekly Exception Handling meeting schedule and agenda
    • Cultivate and implement ideas into Exception Handling workflow
    • Plan and communicate daily workflow to Exception Handling team
    • Attend LIS meetings, investigate and troubleshoot process upgrades
    • Foster communication and teamwork between all Exception Handling shifts and leadership roles
    • Monitor and investigate Exception Handling LIS pending lists
    • Other duties as assigned

    • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff through both verbal and written communications

    Necessary Education & Experience

    • Must be 18 years of age or older and legally authorized to work in the United States
    • High School diploma or GED
    • Two (2) or more years of experience working in a laboratory setting required

    Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

    • Ability to lift and move 20-40 pounds on an occasional basis (up to 25% of time)
    • Ability to stand, walk, bend and reach on a regular basis (standing ~50% of time; sitting ~50% of time)
    • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height
    • Position requires work in normal laboratory environment; Personal protective equipment is required while working in the laboratory
