  • Summary of Major Responsibilities

    The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting the implementation of the Exact Sciences EHS Program. This position reports directly to the Exact Sciences EHS Manager. The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist will assist the EHS Manager in both Exact Sciences Corporate and Laboratories responsibilities to include creation and implementation of policies, procedures, training and monitoring workplace practices and activities to ensure that employees abide by company policies and government safety regulations.  The position ensures laboratory compliance with Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), College of American Pathologists (CAP) and other Federal, State and Local agencies as necessary.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Administers Environmental, Health, and Safety programs to meet regulatory requirements and company goals.
    • Provides technical expertise with regards to completing risk assessment activities to minimize EHS related risk (e.g. PPE Risk Assessment, IH Risk Assessment, Ergonomic Risk Assessment, Site Risk Assessment) to the organization.
    • Inspects facilities and operations for regulatory and company policy compliance.
    • Conducts or assists the leadership team in incident investigations.
    • May function as the Chemical Hygiene Officer, Emergency Coordinator, Biological Safety Officer, Safety Committee chair or other technical lead.
    • Maintains strong collaborative relationships with all Exact Sciences staff while actively promoting a culture of safety, regulatory compliance and best management practices. 
    • Works with management to ensure that the SDS database is up to date.
    • Assists EHS Manager, Human Resources and Management to maintain records of exposures, medical examination follow-ups, and employee return to work requirements. 
    • Documents all safety related activities and compiles data for review by management. Assists with the investigation of trends and works with management to develop countermeasures when necessary.
    • Administers new employee and annual safety training including biological, chemical, general, and physical protection in laboratories, hazardous materials, PPE, and BBP exposure.
    • Coordinates severe weather, evacuation drills and fire extinguisher training for all sites and shifts throughout the year.
    • Promotes a positive relationship and Interacts with a variety of regulatory agencies and professionals including OSHA, WDNR, CAP and other Federal, State and/or local regulations, as applicable.
    • Monitors completion of required tasks such as fire extinguisher inspections, lab permit/registration renewals, injury and illness reporting, and regulatory filings and acts to complete in a timely manner.
    • Oversee hazardous and infectious waste disposal program.
    • Ability to use and wear safety protective gear/equipment (e.g. safety glasses, lab coat, gloves, etc.) and follow safety guidelines.
    • Ability to work with hazardous or flammable materials so as not to endanger oneself or others.
    • Ability to use computers daily in an interactive manner for extended periods of time and up to 8 hours per day.
    • Ability to sit for an extended period of time.
    • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and up to 6 hours at a time.
    • Ability to travel (by land and air), on occasion.
    • Ability to frequently and accurately communicate with employees, customers, and vendors in person, via the telephone, video conference, or by email.
    • Constant walking or motion to coordinate work and interact with co-workers.
    • Ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds on an occasional basis.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee has the potential for exposure to infectious substances, hazardous chemicals and/or hazardous waste. The risks of which are minimized through compliance with established safety policies and engineering control practices.
    • Assists EHS Manager with additional duties as needed.
    • Regular and reliable attendance.


    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational, Health and Safety, Environmental Health or related field; or Associate’s degree in Occupational, Health and Safety, Environmental Health or related field and 2 years of relevant experience in lieu of bachelor’s degree.
    • 2+ years of EHS experience required.
    • Strong workforce management skills; demonstrated ability to effectively manage workload and resourcing.
    • Ability to react to issues in a positive, productive way and successfully deal with work delegation in a fast-paced environment.
    • Knowledge of relevant regulations (OSHA, WDNR, CAP, FDA, CLIA).
    • Demonstrated experience analyzing, interpreting & driving improvements to optimize facility resources.
    • Demonstrated attention to detail.
    • Demonstrated ability to influence cross functional partners, lead organizational change, develop cross-functional internal sponsors, and build alignment to achieve desired outcomes.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in a clinical laboratory – two years required, four years preferred.
    • Experience with ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards.
    • Department of Transportation (DOT) Certification.
    • RCRA certification.
    • At least two years’ experience in a clinical laboratory or research facility.
    • 40hr HAZWOPER.
    • 1st aid/AED/CPR Certification.
