  • Summary of Major Responsibilities

    The Non-Certified Clinical Laboratory Technician I provides services of a support nature in the laboratory service areas.  Performs general laboratory procedures in the clinical laboratory to provide physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results.  Duties include; processing of specimens in the laboratory, reagent preparation, sample, consumable and reagent inventory storage and use management, performing and documenting quality assurance, quality control and equipment maintenance, recognizing problems and assisting the Clinical Laboratory Supervisor in troubleshooting and answering the telephone. 


    The shift for this position is Tuesday - Friday from 8:00pm - 6:30am. 

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Technical Skills

    • In training to develop an understanding of appropriate specimen collection, handling, and transport.
    • Accurately processes specimens according to established departmental procedures. May include specimen triaging, routing, and storing.
    • Evaluates specimens for acceptability and follows the appropriate procedures for specimens that do not meet acceptance criteria. Initiates problem resolution.
    • Prepares, organizes, and reviews specimens for run set up according to departmental procedures. Ensures accurate sample order and patient identification.
    • Prepares reagents according to laboratory requirements.
    • Under direct supervision, completes training to perform selected waived and/or qualitative, semi-quantitative or quantitative tests. Tests must be performed automatically by an instrument or through the use of previously calibrated and approved automatic syringes or other dispensers and/or procedures.
    • Performs and documents quality control and assists with equipment maintenance within predetermined parameters. Does not calibrate instrumentation.
    • Result validation cannot be performed by a Technician.
    • Develops proficiency with laboratory information systems.
    • Answers telephone calls in a timely and courteous manner.
    • Refers problems to appropriate technical personnel.
    • Maintains work area. Cleans bench tops and equipment after each spill and daily at the end of the work shift. Documents cleaning and maintenance as required.
    • Stocks and maintains supplies. Discards expired reagents in a manner consistent with applicable safety policies or procedures.
    • Meets output measures as defined by individual group procedures. Assists others in areas of defined competency when assigned workload permits.

    Knowledge Base

    • Complies with safety and hazard regulations as outlined in Clinical Laboratory Safety Policies.  Failure to follow safety protocols will result in disciplinary action.  Understands, maintains and enforces safety guidelines.
    • Recognizes unexpected problems with samples and reagents.
    • The employee will gain knowledge of, and understand the theory of laboratory procedures.
    • Observes principles of data security and patient confidentiality.  Maintains ethical standards in the performance of testing and in interactions with patients, co-workers and other health care professionals. 

    Judgment/Analytical Decision Making

    • Prioritizes order of testing based on priority of request, workload and testing schedules to meet turn-around times. Coordinates general work flow in assigned area.
    • Reviews unexpected test results to assist in the differentiation of technical, instrumental and/or physiologic causes.


    • Responds to technical questions consistent with level of training.
    • Participates in continuing education and staff meetings.  Prepares and presents continuing education programs for department personnel as requested.  Responsible for own professional development.
    • May assist the education coordinator in the development of objectives, learning activities and evaluation mechanisms. 


    • Remains informed of procedure updates and changes.
    • Maintains adequate inventory of reagents and supplies.
    • Discards outdated reagents according to section policy. 
    • Performs inventory counts as requested.
    • Applies step by step thinking, problem solving and critical thinking patterns.
    • Implements changes as assigned in response to new technology and laboratory procedures.


    • Maintains open and effective communication with personnel in work team, and with members of other teams throughout the laboratory.  Demonstrates willingness to cooperate with team members and with cross-functional groups in the laboratory to accomplish timely and accurate testing.
    • Demonstrates professional demeanor, in personal appearance and behavior, in all work-related interactions inside and outside of the laboratory.
    • Demonstrates adaptability by embracing changes in the laboratory with a positive attitude.  Provides constructive criticism for modification of laboratory procedures, policies, and processes.


    Mandatory Skills & Qualifications

    • Demonstrated ability to respond to stakeholder requests in a professional and timely manner.
    • Good written and verbal English communication skills and strong attention to detail. 

    Necessary Education & Experience

    • High school diploma or GED required.
    • Demonstrated ability to respond to stakeholder requests in a professional and timely manner.

    Desired Characteristics

    • Associates degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology or in the chemical or biological sciences preferred.
    • Experience in molecular testing desired.
    • One (1) year of relevant experience as clinical or research laboratory setting. 

    Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

    • Ability to lift and move 20-40 pounds on an occasional basis (up to 25% of time).
    • Ability to stand, walk, bend and reach on a regular basis (standing ≈50% of time; sitting ≈50% of time).   
    • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
    • Ability to listen and speak on the telephone and write simultaneously.
    • Ability to operate telephone system and computer keyboard and mouse.
    • Position requires work in normal laboratory environment. Special uniform and personal protective equipment is required while working in the laboratory.

    Visual, hearing, dexterity and mental demands

    • Vision: Adequate to perform the essential functions of the job such as read and perform lab tests.
    • Hearing: Adequate to perform the essential functions of the job such as hear timer alarms, etc.
    • Speaking: Adequate to perform the essential functions of the job such as communicating with staff, colleagues and providers.
    • Dexterity: Adequate to perform the essential functions of the job including computer and lab work.
    • Mental Demands: Adequate to perform the essential functions of the job such as the stress of reporting STAT lab work and performing multiple procedures simultaneously.
