  • Summary of Major Responsibilities

    The Supervisor, Specimen Processing Training will work with the Specimen Processing Managers to coordinate, develop and communicate the training program and competency assessments for employees in the Specimen Processing department. This position will collaborate with the Specimen Processing Department to coordinate and ensure the proper execution of new employee onboarding, training for new and existing procedures, and competency assessments. In addition, the Training Supervisor will actively seek new techniques and processes to continually enhance the training program.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Performs all assigned job duties following laboratory policies and procedures.
    • Oversees the training and competency process for the laboratory.
    • Assists in the creation of department specific training materials
    • Identifies training needs/ resources, and provides training as needed.
    • Observes principles of data security and patient confidentiality. 
    • Maintains ethical standards in the performance of testing and in interactions with patients, co-workers and other health care professionals.
    • Performs analytical and decision-making functions without direct supervision.
    • Evaluates and documents all employee’s skills and abilities to identify when employees require assistance, remedial action and corrective actions.
    • Trains and demonstrates to others the operation of laboratory instruments, ensuring proper function of equipment. Documents the required maintenance activities on equipment, recognizes and elevates potential issues to the appropriate department.
    • Develops and delivers classroom style lectures, training and competency material specific to processes and procedures in the Specimen Processing Lab.
    • Evaluates results of implemented training processes used for training and proficiency purposes.
    • Identifies, develops and participates in continuing education and staff meetings.
    • Teaches laboratory procedures, processes and policies, including instrument operation, as requested and where appropriate.
    • Verifies competency for all employees working in the Specimen Processing Lab.
    • Provides input and guidance for procedural changes and enhancements. Contributes to design, research, writing, and review of laboratory manuals. 
    • Identifies training and development needs, establishing and implementing training program, while evaluating the effectiveness of the training and development program.
    • Supervises laboratory personnel as assigned.  Provides continual guidance and growth opportunities to employees.
    • Responsible for obtaining and/or creating, distributing, and filing of specimen processing training material.
    • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies.
    • Applies step by step thinking, problem solving and critical thinking patterns.
    • Maintains open and effective communication with personnel in work team, and with members of other teams throughout the laboratory, maintaining a collaborative and engaging work environment. 
    • Demonstrates willingness to cooperate with team members and with cross-functional groups in the laboratory to accomplish timely and accurate testing. Demonstrates a professional demeanor in all work-related interactions inside and outside of the laboratory.
    • Provides constructive feedback for modification of laboratory procedures, policies and test/employee scheduling.
    • Maintains open and continual communication with the laboratory administration to ensure a collaborative and engaging work environment is maintained.
    • Regular and reliable attendance.
    • Support and comply with the company’s Quality Management System policies and procedures.
    • Position requires work in a normal laboratory environment. Personal protective equipment is requirement when working in the laboratory.
    • Ability to lift and move 20- 40 pounds on an occasional basis (up to 25% of time).
    • Ability to stand, walk, bend and reach on a regular basis (standing ~50% of time; sitting ~50% of time).
    • Ability to work in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 75% of a typical working day.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Must be 18 years of age or older and leally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
    • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
    • 3+ years work experience in a laboratory or similar environment (i.e. maintaining sample integrity, following procedures and protocols, sample collection/handling).
    • 1+ years of experience leading or directing people.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of peer training development.
    • General knowledge of CAP, GLP, GDP, CLIA, New York Department of Health (NYDOH) and HIPAA.
    • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Science, Healthcare, Education or related field.
    • Experience in adult learning environments.
