Summary of Major Responsibilities

The Supervisor, Laboratory Operations will schedule and perform routine molecular biology and next-generation sequencing procedures following Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in accordance with regulatory guidelines. This role will supervise and mentor lab personnel, provide technical guidance to resolve laboratory issues, work with senior management to assure goals are being met, and manage and develop workflows to maximize team potential.


This role will be for second shift.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, and execute laboratory work to meet established deadlines and priorities as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Provide daily guidance and oversight to the lab team to meet processing expectations.
  • Coordinate training for lab specialists with the training manager and hold accountability for completion of lab tasks by team members.
  • Work closely with manager to ensure company and team goals are met and that high quality work is completed timely.
  • Assist managers by providing information for capacity planning, process improvement, and sample throughout planning, as needed.
  • Organize day-to-day staffing, scheduling, and setting up sample run schedules.
  • Handle employee issues and collaborate with manager to resolve issues, as needed.
  • Ensure alignment with team for reasoning behind instructions and processes, changes that are made, and why certain ideas cannot be implemented effectively.
  • Plan and lead shift meetings.
  • Escalate lab issues and team concerns to manager by communicating any challenges and suggesting solutions when possible.
  • Supervise staff including but not limited to organize and prioritize work, write/conduct performance reviews, train/develop, and manage work performance.
  • Communicate goals clearly to employees to ensure understanding and success in achieving them.
  • Motivate and inspire employees to do their best work through coaching.
  • Maintain morale and support employee engagement initiatives.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and act as a role model.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage several tasks at once and develop workflows for lab personnel.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate cross-functionally with other lab operations work groups, process engineering, production development, research and innovation, and support.

  • Ability to work on a computer and phone simultaneously.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment including microscopes, microtomes, blades, strainers, pipettes for extended periods of time.
  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
  • Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high speed centrifugation.
  • Ability to travel 5% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in a scientific discipline or related field as outlined in the essential duties.
  • 5+ years of experience working in a laboratory setting.
  • 2+ years of experience creating and managing laboratory scheduling and workloads.
  • 2+ years of experience leading or directing people and/or project teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to take on individual projects assigned by manager or other laboratory leaders with minimal to no supervision.
  • Strong background in molecular biology and a demonstrated ability to understand new scientific concepts.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain ASCP certification within 12 months of hire and maintain throughout employment in position.
  • Professional working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and other relevant regulatory agency standards, such as CLIA.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures and practices to include standard precautions and hazardous chemical
  • Proficiency with basic laboratory calculations, such as dilutions and weights.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline or related field as outlined in the essential duties.
  • 2+ years of experience with next-generation sequencing.
