Summary of Major Responsibilities

The Laboratory Service Optimization Engineer is responsible for the initial service of new equipment during the post launch phase and working to optimize the service until transitioning the full service to the whole Instrument and Automation Services team. This role will also be an integral point of integrating service needs for new laboratories. The Laboratory Service Optimization Engineer will work closely with new laboratory projects that effect the equipment support as a core team member to ensure we drive in our service requirements.

 

The Laboratory Service Optimization Engineer is expected to develop a working knowledge of all Exact Sciences laboratory processes and associated systems. They will participate in cross-functional teams working in a variety of areas, including Process Engineering, Assay Chemistry, our Clinical and Development Laboratories, Program Management, Research, Analytical Sciences, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, and other groups.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Represent the service organization as a core team member on automation and other laboratory improvement projects.
  • Respond to instrument-related errors, perform root cause analysis to identify the problem, and implement an appropriate corrective action to repair the instrument in a time-critical customer service-oriented manner.
  • Assess current service needs for new laboratories and execute integration plans to support them.
  • Perform new clinical laboratory equipment installations, plan maintenance, and unscheduled event on laboratory equipment supporting Exact Sciences Laboratories (e.g., custom automation equipment, liquid handling robots, etc.).
  • Assist in coordinating instrument installations and qualifications per service policies.
  • Assist in troubleshooting laboratory systems that need technical investigation.
  • Identify improvements to help automate and simplify the service processes, and drive improvements for the overall laboratory, through response time, improving our quality of repairs, and capability of the equipment.
  • Coordinate escalation of issues with vendors to quickly address elevated concerns.
  • Provide ongoing document support to address changes to service requirements and drive improvements for service activities.
  • Recommend and assist in implementing engineering changes to ensure ongoing high-quality performance of laboratory equipment.
  • Perform all service activities in compliance with all relevant safety and regulatory bodies (e.g., OSHA, CLIA, etc.).
  • Maintain and continuously develop personal knowledge and expertise related to the service of complex clinical laboratory equipment.
  • Track all service activities utilizing system(s) developed in accordance with service policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all service documentation is complete, timely, and accurate following Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a dynamic and interdisciplinary laboratory environment.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to change and new technical challenges while providing strong technical leadership.

  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds for approximately 5% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 35% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Ability and means to travel between Madison locations.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field; or Associates degree in Engineering or related field and 2 years of relevant experience as outlined in the essential duties in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree; or High School degree/General Education diploma and 4 years of relevant experience as outlined in the essential duties in lieu of Bachelor’s degree.
  • 2+ years of experience working on laboratory automation equipment; including automated liquid handlers.
  • 2+ years of experience working in service operations or a related field as outlined in the essential duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with standard molecular biology techniques, such as nucleic acid isolation, RNA/DNA quantification, PCR, and RT-PCR.
  • Experience with Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS).
  • Experience with Digital Pathology Imagining.
  • Working knowledge of database, laboratory information management systems, and other file management applications.
  • Working knowledge of CAP and CLIA regulations.
  • Automated liquid handler scripting software.
