Summary of Major Responsibilities

The Biorepository Associate I is dedicated to collecting, banking, and processing human tissue and other samples for research and development (R&D) activities ranging from proof-of-concept experiments to clinical validation studies. The Biorepository Associate I will be responsible for the daily functions of the core as well as supporting growth into future areas of service.  This position requires strong communication and organizational skills, and some degree of technical expertise including, but not limited to, knowledge of tissue handling, pathology and necropsy, biosafety protocols, and requirements of patient consent and privacy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Complete sample accessioning, including, but not limited to, receive biomaterials, make initial quality assessments, and capture all relevant data.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining a physical inventory of all R&D biomaterials.
  • Execute all specimen transactions into and out of the biomaterials core; ensure proper sign-off for all material requests.
  • Utilize digital slide scanner platform.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with teams and external clients.
  • Assist in communication of issues and/or risks to key stakeholders.
  • Attend and participate in cross-functional study team meetings, as needed.
  • Test new protocols and equipment; including, but not limited to, tissue processing, alternate storage methods, digital slide scanners, and LCM platforms.
  • Assist in the physical build-out of the biomaterials core facility.

  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 65% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to work seated for approximately 65% of a typical working day. Ability to work standing for approximately 35% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds for approximately 2% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment, including items such as microscopes, microtomes, blades, strainers, and pipettes for extended periods of time.
  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
  • Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.
  • Ability and means to travel between Exact Sciences locations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences or field as outlined in the essential duties or High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and 4 years of relevant experience as outlined in the essential duties.
  • 1+ years of work experience in a histology lab.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with common pathology/histopathology protocols.
  • Proven track record of reliability and demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Proficient computer skills to include internet navigation and email usage.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with tissue bank work.
  • Work experience with relational databases and the SQL language.
